The Kelowna CHIP Pancake Breakfast

CHIP Pancake Breakfast July 1 – Canada Day! A day of celebration and family fun! The Kelowna CHIP team and young adults from the Kelowna and Rutland Churches bustled around the parking lot of the Kelowna Lifestyle Centre, getting ready to welcome people from the community who were hungry for a free breakfast and a little celebrating. With skillets inside and outside and lots of whole wheat pancake mix, syrup, and blueberry topping, they were ready for a large crowd.

They didn’t have long to wait. A little before 9 o’clock they began to arrive –- families, seniors, and young people. The kids were delighted with the large, inflated jumping room that was erected on the lot. In fact, one family decided to come because their children spotted the jumping room as they were passing by and dragged their parents over to see what was happening. The pancakes were tasty and no one seemed to notice that they were made without eggs. More than 170 visitors came through the line, many of them new to the Lifestyle Centre. A lot were interested in the upcoming CHIP session in September and gladly accepted our handouts. As they ate and refilled their plates, they watched an exercise demonstration by Sherri Simpson, “the pole lady.” They also enjoyed the live music by Diane Wirtz, our own Kelowna gospel singer.

Will we do it again? You can be sure we will. What better way to break down barriers of prejudice and reach out to those in the community!
